Senior operations project managers are responsible for guiding the overall direction of critical manufacturing projects and facilitating communication with project managers, organizational leaders and other stakeholders. They may be responsible for overseeing reporting and documentation, reviewing contracts, ensuring all deadlines are met, analyzing financial statements and performance indicators, and ensuring that project budgets remain intact. They are also charged with adjusting project strategy and execution in response to changing needs and scope. 

Senior operations project managers typically work in an office setting but they may be required to visit various external project locations. They typically work more than a 40 hour work week, especially when projects are nearing closing dates.  

Essential Qualifications  

Requirements for senior operations project managers can vary from company to company but they are typically required to hold a minimum of a BS in engineering as well as five or more years of experience leading project teams in a manufacturing setting 

In addition, senior operations project managers should have excellent communication skills, independent decision-making abilities, leadership skills, people management skills, problem-solving skills and time management skills.  

Pay and Outlook 

While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect specific data on senior operations project managers, they do include these professionals in the wider category of business operations specialists. The median national salary for these types of roles was $70,010 in 2018, with the top 90% earning more than $120,000 annually. 

According to the BLS, operations jobs are expected to grow 7% through 2028, faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 591,800 new jobs.

As a senior operations project manager, the chosen candidate will support operations project management for new products, product/subassembly transfers to other suppliers, newly acquired site integrations and contract manufacturers. Candidates are required to hold a BS in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering as well as a minimum of five years of experience in operations for manufacturing, manufacturing engineering and project management.  Experience in electronics/electrical capital device equipment assembly is required as is experience in medical devices.  Strong PC skills are also necessary in Excel, Access PowerPoint and Project, and candidates must have experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software, preferably Solidworks 

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, strong leadership skills, the ability to plan, organize and implement tasks; the ability to define project risk and management risks, and should be open-minded. Compensation is $150,000 with the opportunity to earn 15% bonus.
